As a leading provider of dental services, we feel it is very important to educate our patients. We have found that informed patients are more likely to take their dental health seriously, thus reducing their risk of developing advanced dental problems. Poor dental health has been linked to heart disease, cancer, and other serious health problems.

In recent years, society has placed great emphasis on the importance of having healthy bodies, but a large section of the population does not yet understand the importance of healthy teeth and gums. Many people neglect their mouths or assume that brushing is enough, but our mouths require more care than this. Taking preventative measures by visiting the dentist regularly greatly reduces the risk of tooth and bone loss, infection, and the need for dental prosthetics, such as bridges, partials, and dentures.

General Dentistry
General Dentists provide primary dental care for patients of all ages. Their main responsibility is to diagnose dental problems and manage the treatment of oral health. Rather than specializing in one particular area of dentistry, general dentists are trained and skilled in performing all dental procedures. The most common dental services provided by general dentists include exams, teeth cleanings, fillings, extractions, oral hygiene instruction, root canals, treatment of gum disease, crowns & bridges, and sealants.

Orthodontics
Orthodontists are highly trained dentists who specialize in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Such misalignment of the teeth and jaws is referred to as “malocclusion,” or “bad bite.” The most common orthodontic problems are protruding upper teeth, overbite, open bite, and irregular spacing. These problems can be inherited or acquired, and it is best when they are detected early. To correct malocclusion, orthodontists often treat patients through the use of braces and by designing corrective appliances. The goal of these treatments is to realign the teeth and jaws, restore facial balance, and prevent further health problems. Because crowded and misaligned teeth are difficult to keep clean, orthodontic treatment is necessary to maintain good oral health.

Periodontics
Periodontists are highly trained dentists who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the gums and bone that hold teeth in place; symptoms include bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose or separating teeth, a change in the way teeth fit together, and gums that pull away from the teeth. Gingivitis, a term with which many people are familiar, is the first stage of periodontal disease. A periodontist’s job is to diagnose these conditions early and perform deep cleaning treatments and surgical treatments (when necessary) to prevent tooth loss and further damage to the gums and bone.

Periodontists also specialize in the placement of dental implants, a longer lasting alternative to bridges, partials, and dentures. Dental implants look and feel more like real teeth.

Endodontics
Endodontists are highly trained dentists who specialize in root canal therapy. All teeth have roots that anchor them into the bone found below the gums. Teeth can have one, two, three, or four roots, depending on their location in the mouth. The interior of each root is called the “canal.” Therefore, if a tooth has three roots, it also has three canals. Very delicate tissues, called “pulp,” fill these canals. When the pulp becomes infected, due to deep decay, injury to the tooth, or repeated dental treatment, root canal therapy is necessary. An endodontist’s job is to remove the damaged pulp, clean the canals, and fill the canals with a special material to preserve the tooth. General dentists are trained to perform routine root canal treatments, but endodontists are qualified to treat complex cases that require advanced expertise and special instruments. Such cases include fractured and chipped teeth, teeth that have been knocked out of the mouth, and teeth with irregular roots.

Oral Surgery
Oral Surgeons are highly trained dentists who specialize in diagnosing and treating disease, injuries, and defects that negatively affect the functionality and aesthetics of the hard and soft tissues of the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw. An oral surgeon’s areas expertise include administering anesthesia; treatment of jaw disorders; removal of diseased and impacted teeth; placement of dental implants; repairing facial trauma; and reconstructive surgery.

Pedodontics
Pedodontists, also known as pediatric dentists, specialize in the treatment of primary, or “baby,” teeth and the specific dental problems that arise in children. Pedodontists treat children from the time they are infants through adolescence, guiding their growth and development, and working to prevent future dental problems. One area of a pedodontist’s expertise is dealing with child behavior. They are particularly skilled at making children feel comfortable while at the dental office. In addition, pedodontists are trained to treat patients with special health care needs.
